Parliament to the people

With the aim of addressing communities concerns regarding governance, service delivery and development, further providing linkages between parliamentary committees and Menkhoaneng, Linare and Serupane Community Councils, Transformation Resource Centre (TRC) and Action Aid Lesotho have planned dialogues between communities and four parliamentary portfolio committees. These committees include Social Cluster, Natural Resources Cluster, Economic and Development Cluster and Prime Minister’s Ministries Cluster.

The overarching goal of this project is to Promote Good Governance Practices through increased public participation and state accountability leading to quality service delivery. Therefore the aim of the workshop is to provide a platform for both communities and portfolio committees in an effort to provide linkages between in sustainable developments. Communities are expected to effectively engage parliament committees and be empowered sufficiently and vocal and demand accountability from the committees.

Some of the main objectives include:
• To provide platform for effective engagement between communities and portfolio committees on governance and developments issues.
• To empower the participants to actively participate and contribute to their respective needs and act in solidarity to demand accountability from parliament and national government in providing quality service delivery
• To enhance communities awareness, participation and government responsiveness and accountability to communities’ delivery of quality services
• To provide more information and knowledge about committees and their role in responding to communities needs
• To provide linkages and immediate response to communities

The forum will comprise of 20 representatives from portfolio committees inclusive of committees’ chairs and 25 communities representatives from each community council namely: Serupane, Linare and Menkhoaneng and will be staged on the 9th November 2011 at Leribe Hotel in Hlotse, Leribe.
