2012 Election is time for youth to fight their clamities

Progress in terms of raising awareness about Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) among young people is tramendous. However the success does not rule out daunting challenge to enhence relationship beween youth and MDGs tagets.

So, in an indeavour to create a platform for youth to translate MDGs into ‘campaignable’ messages, TRC together with UNDP held a national youth conference at Manthabiseng Convention Centre on the 30th November 2011. The views of young people on MDGs were consolidated for stronger subsequent campaigns that will be organized by political parties. The conference was composed of representation of various groups of youth organizations, youth leagues and nongovernmental organizations (students and non-students).

Some of the specific objectives were:
To promote interparty dialogue on millennium development goals among youth leagues
To expose non MDGs integrated manifestos of political parties;
To provide media coverage on political parties’ MDGs integrates manifestos;
To create youth league debate competition on MDGs;
To mobilize young people and rally them towards integration of the Goals into their policy agenda;
To influence MDG perception be an instrument that informs youth political choices on election 2012;

It was expected after the conference that interparty competition on millennium development goals and integration of MDGs in policy debate will enhance, political parties that have MDGs integrated manifestos will get more publicity for election 2012, evaluation of political parties will be shared with the media for public discussion, the political leadership will subsequently participate in the process to advance their MDGs perspective in election, and also that a development of a documentary for further mobilization.

200 delegates participated at this historic event.
